
The post-war period puts great strain on SJ, which has an organisation of around 70,000 employees and about 15,000 km of railway, with many nationalised lines that have weak financial viability. Both rail travel and freight handling decline, creating deficits for SJ. Something has to be done, and the solution is to close unprofitable lines. This is just the beginning of what is to come. Road traffic continues to increase and takes even more shares from SJ in all areas.
